Planning wall shelves and bookcases
Floating shelves look best with 10-14 inches between them and should be fixed into studs or masonry anchors rated well above what you plan to put on them. Freestanding branch or tree bookcases need a level floor and, for tall pieces, an anti-tip strap to the wall. Measure the depth of your largest books or bottles before you choose - 8-10 inches suits most novels, 12 inches suits art books and records.
How much weight can a floating wood shelf hold?
It depends far more on the wall fixing than the wood. Into studs with the supplied hardware, a solid wood shelf holds books and decor comfortably; drywall-only anchors are not recommended for heavy loads.
Do tall bookcases need to be anchored?
Yes. Any tall freestanding piece should be strapped to the wall, especially in homes with children or pets.
Can you make a shelf in a custom length?
Often, yes. Email us with the wall width and the depth you need and we will quote it before you order.
